South Asian Heritage Month 18th July to 17th August 2024
Wednesday, 17 July 2024
South Asian Heritage Month is a time dedicated to celebrating the heritage of people with roots in the South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives. Observed from 18th July to 17th August, this celebration provides an opportunity to recognise the significant impact that people of South Asian descent have had on global culture, economics, science, and the arts. Set up in 2019, this event aims to recognise and celebrate the contributions those communities have made to the UK. The theme this year is 'Free to Be Me'.
Throughout South Asian Heritage Month, a range of events and activities take place to celebrate South Asian heritage. These include cultural festivals, art exhibitions, film screenings, panel discussions, and educational workshops. Schools and universities often incorporate lessons on South Asian history and culture into their core curriculum, while organisations and businesses host events to promote diversity and inclusion. South Asian Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the importance of multiculturalism.
